My little one has been potty trained for about 5 months now and I have to say that I miss the cute cloth diapers that he had. My cousin is pregnant and I am making her some diapers, but that is not going to be the same thing.

Washing & Drying Cloth Diapers

Cloth diapers are a great thing to use. They are better for the environment and can save you a lot of money. This article goes over issues surrounding washing and drying cloth diapers and things to consider.

Washing

Traditionally boil washing was the used to wash cloth diapers. This was considered the only way to kill bacteria and is still something many people do, however you can actually get away with washing diapers at 40 degrees. This, however, is not recommended when dealing with newborn babies and the first 6 weeks. In these weeks it is much better to stick to a 60 degree wash. After this time you can then wash at 40 degrees, although it may be a good idea to do a 60 degree wash every so often. Most wraps, however, can only be washed at 40 degrees so if you choose to do a 60 degree wash make sure your wraps aren't in it!

You also have to consider what to use to wash them. You may be using cloth diapers because you don't want chemicals near your baby's skin and thus want to use something eco to wash them in. Eco-balls are a popular choice to use on clothing but from research, AI have discovered that eco balls are not a good choice for dealing with diapers. According to searches on Google, eco balls can potentially damage the diapers.

There are many great eco detergents available but these can be expensive. A better way for you, if you want to save more money, is to use soap nuts. These are placed in a cotton bag and then put in your machine. These are a great way to clean diapers. White vinegar can also be used to help neutralize smells and you can also use tee tree oil for its anti-bacterial properties.

Drying

If you have a concern for stains your best bet will be to dry your diapers outside in sunshine. Sunshine will naturally bleach your diapers and will also deodorize them. If you decide on using a tumble drier be careful as a drier will shorten the lifespan of your diapers. I have found that my cotton diapers have fallen apart fairly quickly as a result of using a drier often and I have had to replace ties often. However I found a drier important because it was the only way I could get them to be soft and also I live in the UK and the weather is never good enough to dry my diapers quickly.

If you have problems with getting your diapers soft but don't want the drier to damage them, you could compromise and half dry them on the line and then put them in the drier for a shorter period of time. Also don't be tempted to use fabric conditioner to soften nappies as fabric conditioner reduces absorbency.

How Many Cloth Diapers Do I Need?

How many cloth diapers you need depends on the age of your baby and how often you plan to wash diapers. You will need fewer in each size as you baby grows. The type of diapers you choose will also influence the number of diapers you need.

Some styles will need changing a bit less often. For instance, pocket diapers have a moisture resistant barrier between the baby and the absorbent insert. This means you can change baby less often unless the diaper is dirty so you will likely need fewer than for a less absorbent option.

If you have a heavy wetter your baby will be on the high end of the number shown. You can extend the absorbency by using a doubler, using two prefolds or using newborn prefolds as doublers for older babies. With my own daughter, I often use a hemp and micrifiber pocket insert combination so she stays dry all night and during long naps. Since I can't always predict her naps, I use this combo a lot during the day and it works great for keeping her dry.

While one size diapers are popular right now, many parents prefer the less bulky fit of sized diapers. Since your baby is likely to only need two sizes and will need only a few of the larges if they happen to get that big, sized diapers offer a great option for parents.

Cloth diapering will save you a lot of money, but the up front investment can be intimidating for parents who are unsure if cloth is the best choice for their families. If you can't afford to invest in all you need all at once, you can start with one day's worth and then add more the next time you get paid. Just take the amount you are spending now on disposables and save it to purchase more cloth once a month until you have the number you need.

You will want to get a few extras to have on hand while you are washing diapers. Nothing is worse than having a sick baby and no clean diapers.

Up to 6 Mos. 10-12 per day
6-12 Mos. 8-10 per day
12-24 Mos. 6-8 per day
Potty Learning 2-4 per day

You will need one diaper cover for about every 4-6 diapers you have. Most covers can be reused a few times by airing them out between changes unless they are dirty. It is always a good idea to have one more cover than you think you need in case one gets dirty at a bad time!

Wool covers can go even longer between washes if they are properly lanolized when they are washed. PUL diaper covers are easily cleaned and dry quickly if the need to handwash one arises between loads of laundry.

Pockets and all-in-ones do not need covers. You will need to have at least 1 insert for each day time pocket style and 2-3 inserts for each night time diaper. Hemp is a great choice for extra absorbency for heavy wetters or overnight.

One Size Cloth Diapers - Never Buy Diapers Again

One size cloth diapers are a popular choice in cloth diapering. Most one size diapers will fit from about 8 to about 35 pounds. Exact size range depends on the brand. With one size cloth diapers you can use the same diapers for an infant and a toddler. This is great if you have two in diapers or if you only want to buy diapers once.

What are the pros and cons of one size diapers?

First, the pros. One size cloth diapers are convenient if you have more than one child in cloth diapers. You can use the same diapers on both children. If you plan to diaper only one child, you will typically save money by using mostly one size cloth diapers. You'll need about 2 dozen diapers in your stash for one child if you wash every other day, more if you have two in diapers or want to go three days between washes. Obviously, using the same diapers as your child grows is less expensive than buying new ones as they change sizes.

Next, the cons. One size diapers are a good option for many parents but they are not always the best option. Diapers, like anything else, will wear out over time. If you wash your diapers about every other day, they will be washed 180 times in a year. So, to last through birth to potty training, a diaper will need to go through over 400 washes. Imagine finding a pair of jeans that would last 400 washes and still look new. Washing diapers does cause a certain amount of wear and tear. Snap diapers will last longer than hook and loop fastening diapers, but no diaper will last forever. If you use a small number of diapers and wash more often, they will wear out more quickly than if you have a large number of diapers and wash less often. If you plan to use the same diapers on more than one child, be prepared to replace some of them for the second child as those same diapers will now be expected to go through hundreds more washes!

Babies come in different shapes and sizes and not all newborns can go straight into one size diapers. I did use some one size diapers on my 6 pound 11 ounce baby, but she fit into them much better at 8-10 pounds. Some kids grow faster, some potty train later. I can get a Wahmies One Size on my 36 pound niece, who is not yet ready to potty train, but there is no way a BumGenius will fit around her substantial thighs.

So, while there is no perfect solution, many parents choose to use about half one size diapers and about half sized diapers. One size cloth diapers are a great option to save you money and storage space, and they are available in several different styles. Sized diapers come in extra small through extra large sizes and different brands fit differently, so you can often find a perfect fit in a sized diaper. Other parents happily use exclusively one size diapers.

I changed my Cloth Diaper stash again!!

Now it is nothing but all in ones. and a couple of all in 2's. My son is almost potty trained and I have been letting him go around most of the day with underwear and trainers on and then at night he wears an all in one to bed. I have a few all in ones that I bought and then most of them are ones that I made. I have about 2 yards of white PUL to make some more out of. I love using all in ones now.

Birdseye cloth diapers are the old-fashioned version of a one size cloth diaper. Your grandma or great-grandma probably used these soft cotton diapers for their babies. These deceptively simple pieces of cloth are perfect for everything from keeping a baby dry to cleaning windows without leaving lint behind.

Birdseye cloth diapers are simple to use and they are one of the cheapest cloth diapering options (making your own diapers out of old-t-shirts and flannel sheets is probably the cheapest and there are some great resources online if you want to make diapers from recycled materials). One reason they are such a great deal for diapering your baby is that they can easily be recycled several times after baby is through with diapers. An investment of less than $100 could get you enough cloth diapers and diaper covers to last until your baby potty-trains, then you can use them as cleaning cloths!

Birdseye cloth diapers are made from a single layer of cotton fabric known as birdseye. The name comes from the diamond texture of the fabric weave. Birdseye is very absorbent and becomes softer with use.

The very low start-up cost of using flat birdseye diapers is not the only way these old-fashioned diapers save you money. Birdseye cloth diapers save you money on electricity as well since they are so easy to clean and dry. They wash and dry quickly because they are so thin, yet when folded they are still very absorbent. Flat diapers are a great choice if you have limited laundry facilities, want to line-dry your diapers, are on a very tight budget, or want to use them while traveling.

Because these diapers dry so quickly they are great for line drying. You can easily wash them for camping and travel, making them a great choice for any situation where you do not have access to washing and drying facilities or when you want to save energy on washing and drying.

Birdseye is a low-lint fabric, making it perfect for cleaning windows and dusting. Many people buy birdseye cloth diapers for use as cleaning cloths. They are the gold standard for polishing cars and cleaning the interior. Flat diapers are also great for lap pads, burp cloths, dish towels and other uses.

The worry that you are going to ruin your cloth diapers is common among users. You have found the wonderful fluffy diapers and you want to keep them for a long time to come. There are some basic rules to follow when washing and using your cloth diapers to give you the best performance and longest life.

First things first, prewash.

When you get your diapers home the first thing you need to do is make them ready for use. Most cloth diapers need to be washed a full cycle before use. Hemp diapers and inserts will need to be washed 3 times separately before they are ready to be used.

Pick the right detergent

Having the right detergent will be the foundation of your diapers best performance and long life. Do not use detergents with additives such as brighteners, enzymes, and fabric softener. All these things will cause build up in your diapers.

Use the right creams

You go to change your baby and you see a small amount of redness on your baby's bottom. Your first reaction might be to reach for the Desitin. But don't do it! Most diaper rash creams will coat your diapers and cause repelling (they will no longer soak up the wetness). They can also do some serious staining to your diapers. Use only cloth diaper approved creams such as Northern Essence Diaper Salve.

If you follow these basic steps and rules you should have cloth diapers that last you a long time with no leaks. Remember to never use fabric softeners or other items such as creams that will build up in your diapers. Build up is a cloth diapers mortal enemy. The proper care of cloth diapers will make your diapering experience the best possible.

Thrift Stores Are A Great Place For Fabric!!

I went to the Goodwill this morning and I found some full size sheets that are flannel. They are great for making diapers out of. Huge and cheap. $1.95 each. Plus it is a different kind of flannel , I guess, because it is thicker than the flannel you can get at a fabric store. All of the diapers that I ever made from sheet flannel have been my favorites. I got some great prints. Cars, Plaid, and stars. Great diapers will be made from these.

Baby Carriers Are Awesome

The best thing that I ever bought when I first had my son was a baby carrier. It was not to bad. Could have been better , but we loved it. I would wear him while I cleaned the house and went for walks. He would laugh and even nap in it. I wish that I would have had one as nice as the ones at Belle Baby Carriers. They are so comfy looking. I would have used mine longer if it was like those.

Handwashing Cloth Diapers

In an emergency this can be a easy and fast thing to do. Like me, this morning, I had to wash some diapers out in the tub because I was almost out of diapers and could not get to the laundry mat. I found some great tips for hand washing cloth diapers on this PAGE. It is not hard to do and in a time of need it can be easily done.

I hand washed mine this morning and then I have them hung up outside on my umbrella clothesline. By time tonight , when I need a cloth diaper , they will be dry and fresh.

What is in your cloth diaper stash??

Right now , most of mine is homemade by me. I have sold all of my cloth diapers and have forced myself to make the diapers that I use now. He is getting close to being potty trained and it is so much fun making cute diapers for him. I am going to miss making and using cloth diapers when he is totally potty trained.I have made him some really cute cloth diapers. I use the Mama Bird Pattern that you can get free online. I have made him some pockets with PUL and most of his stash are fitted cloth diapers that have a hidden soaker layer and I use a doubler with them. I have never had a problem with any of the diapers that I have made him. The only time was I made him 3 diapers a little bigger thinking that they would last longer for him, but they are way too big and fall off of him. I think that he will be potty trained before they would ever fit him!!

I hope that after he is potty trained that I will still make cloth diapers. I can sell them or donate them. They are so fun to make and to make real cute. There are so many cute fabric prints out there.

i always have tons of t-shirts and stuff that I keep and try to make something else out of it. I make cloth diapers, shorts, etc. I love doing this. It is basically free fabric. Jeans can be made into many things , also. Like purses, quilts, pillows, curtains, etc.

If you use your imagination , you can come up with tons of things to make and this is also a great way to save money.

Sorry I Have Not Written In A While

I have been very busy. My husband got laid-off a month ago and this has been a very trying time for the whole family. Money is very tight. I have been sewing some stuff the past couple of days and have some more projects ready to be sewn. I am getting an assembly line of the stuff ready to make a ton of cloth menstrual pads. They are all laid out and ready to be sewn. Hope to get most of them done this weekend. We are supposed to get some more winter weather so this weekend will be perfect for staying in the house and sewing.

A Fun Craft For A Cold Winter Day!!

Applesauce Cinnamon Dough Ornaments

A half a cup cinnamon
A half a cup smooth applesauce
Add 1 teaspoon of craft glue

Pour the cinnamon and applesauce into a small mixing bowl. Stir and knead until the mixture turns to dough. Roll out and cut shapes with cookie cutters. If making hanging ornaments, remember to make a hole at the top with a plastic drinking straw. Allow to dry for approximately 12 hours or until hard. You may need to turn over after 6 six hours to assist in the drying. These creations make nice ornaments.
These smell so good. Hang them all over your house.

13 Tips For Sewing Fast

These tips will help you be able to get your sewing done quickly.

1. Schedule time to sew. Whenever you have free time use it for sewing. Like for me, I sew when my son takes his nap every day. I can get a lot of sewing done in that 1 - 2 hours.

2. Get a "sewing buddy" and plan sewing days that you can meet up and sew together. Helping each other if you can or need the help. Team up to get stuff done twice as fast.

3. Stay Organized!! This is true with everything - If you are organized it just makes the work easier and faster. You are not hunting for your scissors when you need them.

4. Send your kids to a babysitters or grandparents if you can and they are out of school. So you can have a whole day to sew uninterupted.

5. If you have a major item to finish that needs done in a certain time frame , maybe you can turn your phone off for a while.

6. Invest in a swivel office chair for your sewing room or table and that way you can have your ironing board right by your machine and be able to turn from task to task.

7. Do not answer your door! If your home with your family maybe you could invest in a "Do Not Disturb" sign that you can post on your door for when you are in there sewing.

8. Sewing machines run better at high speed. Take care around curves and such , but in straight lines sew full speed. Sewing machines wear out faster when used at low speeds.

9. If you are going to be doing a lot of fittings - sew in your bathrobe so it is fast and easy for you to do all of the fittings.

10. Use a longer stitch length on items that will not be getting a lot of wear.

11. Stock up on all of the supplies that you will need in advance. I always have on hand extra needles, belts, thread, and more.

12. Turn on some music that has an upbeat to it. This will get you moving fast.

13. Take frequent short stretch and refresh breaks when you are sewing for long periods. Grab a cup of tea or coffee, read the newspaper, take a quick walk around the block, etc. This will refresh you and restore your energy. It will get you re-focused on what you are doing.

I got this vintage 1970's pattern at the goodwill and I made it today. It also has pants with it and I want to make some white ones to go with this halter top. Very cute. I hope by summer to have a whole new wardrobe!! This halter top was so easy to make! It took me about an hour to sew it up and I plan on making a few of them in different prints!!!

I got this pattern a while ago and have not had the nerve or time to try it out. So 2 days ago I just told myself that I was doing it whether I wanted to or not! This is a short dress that i plan on wearing with some white leggings or my straight leg jeans. I guess when it is real hot I could wear it as a dress. This is pattern Simplicity # 3807. It was simple enough for being the first piece of clothing that I have ever sewn for myself. Now I am going to make a handbag to go with it. I have sewn a ton of handbags. Most with no pattern , but I just got a new pattern , Butterick B4409, and just love the looks of these handbags. I will start on it tomorrow!!

Cloth Diapers Blowing In The Wind!!!!!!!!!

It is such freaky weather here! We are in southern Indiana and it is currently 70 degrees and so darn windy. I decided to take advantage of it and do a load of diapers and I hung them out to dry. Well as you can see by the photo the wind had them spinning. I thought they were going to take off. My son said it looked like a helicopter. I just had to take some photos of it going wild. They did dry VERY fast!!

Really, I am not sure. My stash of cloth diapers is huge and I love them all , so I really maybe could use some more bigger wool longies. All of the ones that I made him recently have already been outgrown. So I am on the look out for some bigger sweaters at the thrift store that are wool and cheap!! I love making my own diaper items. Funner and they seem to actually work better than anything I ever bought. I have had no issues at all with the diapers that I make. The ones that I have bought have to be stripped all of the time because of stink and they leak. I just do not understand how mine could be better than a 30.00 diaper , but they are. I have been using about 15 cloth diapers that I made for a while now and have not had to strip them once. No stink issues at all!! I have to strip my Kushies, Tiny Tushes, etc at least once a week.

We are going to be so busy and on the run the next few days!! I am wondering which of my cloth diapers will be the best to take and use. I do not want any accidents! He is going to be in his car seat a good deal of time and then at grandma & grandpas and then go to his other grandmas... Man we are all going to be tired. I ALMOST am tempted just to get a small bag of disposables. But I won't. Just use the Wiggle Worm Bottoms covers with his thickest fitteds!

This is just so shocking and such a bad thing for our ever falling economy , but the CPSC is passing a new law that anyone who makes handmade toys, clothing, cloth diapers, etc for children under 12 will have to have the items tested for lead!! That is super expensive to do that testing so, of course WAHM's will be put out of business.

My Cloth Diaper Experiment Is Done!!

I am so excited. It is over and I lasted from December 12th to December 18th on my diapers. That is how long I can go with my whole stash of cloth diapers.

But , now I know that I can use them and that I can last for a few days.

Another Cute Cloth Diaper!!

I made this one out of 2 thick flannel pillow cases that I got at the thrift store. The outer layer is a cute cabin print and the inner layer is a navy blue. So soft , but thick! He wore it to bed last night and it lasted great. I still have enough left to make him another one and I also made him a pair of lounge pants out of the cabin print. He loves them.

I Am Doing A Cloth Diaper Experiment!

I waited until I knew that all of my diapers were clean and started this. Which means I started Friday December 12th ! I am going to go through all of my diapers to see how many days I can go without having to wash them.
I am washing them now though, but I want to know how many I could go if I had to. If there is a power outage or whatever. I have washed some , but I am keeping the clean ones in the laundry room in a basket until my little experiment is done.
So far I am on the 3rd day and still have a huge stack of diapers left. I am thinking I might have enough for a weeks worth. Maybe ! We will see soon enough. I will update at the end of this experiment with my findings.

A Favorite T-Shirt Into A Fitted!

This was a t-shirt that my son loved for me to wear because the frogs were funny looking. But I tore it at the bottom some time back and had to stop wearing it. I put it back and the other day I finally had time to make a fitted cloth diaper for my son. This is an extra large and the inner is from some red flannel that I bought off of ebay for $1.00 for 2 yards!! I lined up the frogs just right on the rear! It is so cute. I made it big enough that he can wear it for a while and this summer wear it so it can be seen!!

You have probably noticed , I love making and using fitted cloth diapers. Well here is another one that I made. A cute extra large one that is truly for a girl. Flannel with a thick soaker layer.

I even had enough flannel left to make a matching doubler for this diaper for night time.

I just love this , too bad I have a son!! I really need to take some pictures of the ones that I made him this past week. I also made him a big stack of cloth wipes. I will take the photos with in the next couple of days.

Great Baby Keepsake & Gift Idea

THIS WOULD MAKE A GREAT CHRISTMAS GIFT!!

This is a great way to have a keepsake of your baby ! Make this clay and take an impression of your babies handprint and footprint. How cool is that? It is also pretty easy. I am planning on doing this on my sons first birthday next week!

Here is the clay recipe:

1 cup baking soda

1/2 cup cornstarch

1 tablespoon salt

3/4 cup water

In a medium sized saucepan ,mix all of the ingredients and heat on high until it comes to a boil. Turn the heat down to low and continue mixing until it becomes thick and creamy and is hard to stir. Remove from heat. Knead with your hands when cool. Flatten out the clay with a rolling pin and place your babies hand or foot firmly into the clay to make an imprint. Use a toothpick or pencil to write their name and dates ,like birthdate and date of imprint. You can even go as far as decorating this with some pretty glass stones or little toys etc etc. Let this harden for a few days! When you roll out the clay you can even use cookie cutters.

Watermelon PUL Cloth Diaper

I had this extra piece of PUL that I just loved and I decided to make a diaper out of it. I had just enough to make a medium. Isn't it cute! I used a real soft , but thick , white flannel for the inside layer with a thick soaker layer. PUL is not too hard to sew with. I was kind of scared to make a diaper out of it , I had only made mama pads out of all of my PUL. This worked out awesome though. I love it. Now I am on the hunt for some more PUL to make more.

Make Your Own Homemade Baby Wipes!

Here is a recipe to make your own baby wipes.

* 1- roll of good-quality ALL WHITE paper towels, cut in half. (I use Bounty, because they're sturdy and I can buy them in bulk.)
* 2 cups warm water
* 2 tablespoons baby shampoo
* 1 tablespoon baby oil
* 1 teaspoon rubbing alcohol, (optional)

Mix water, shampoo, oil, and alcohol in a sutable container. Add 1/2 roll of paper towels, cut side down. (Save other half for next time.) Put on lid and let soak until all liquid is absorbed. (About 5- 10 mins.) Turn container upside-down and leave it for about 30 mins, to make sure liquid is completely absorbed. Turn it back over, wait a few minutes, and they're ready to use!

I like these wipes better than store-bought because they're cheaper, bigger, last longer, and they're made of stuff that you already have on hand if you have a baby.

These Pants Were So Easy To Make!!

I looked online and found the pattern for these cute little pants to make for babies or toddlers that was made out of t-shirts. Well, I took that idea and used the pattern for some fleece diaper covers for my son also. I put elastic in the t-shirt pair , that are made from a t-shirt that my older son outgrew with a dragon down one leg and the other pair was made from some basketball patterned fleece that I got for $1.00 a yard at Wal-Mart a couple of years ago. Very cute fleece longies!!!!!

I love these pants so much that I am going to spend the day tomorrow making a bunch more!!

Making baby food at home

Homemade baby food is not only delicious and economical, it is simple to prepare as well. Being able to control the ingredients, choosing organic produce and meats, and combining favorite foods are some of the hidden benefits to making baby food at home.

While there are entire books on the subject, the process is relatively easy. Vegetables should be steamed, fruits should be simmered, and meat should be poached. The food is then blended in a food mill or food processor and refrigerated or frozen. Baby food can be made in batches small enough to last a few days and stored in the refrigerator or larger batches can be made and frozen for two months.

Choosing when to start your baby on solid foods is a very personal decision. Consult your baby’s doctor for tips on when to start and what foods to start with. Many doctors recommend starting baby on rice cereal. It is also advised to introduce one food at a time, over the course of a week. This will alert you to any food allergies your baby may have. Pureed apples and sweet potatoes are good choices once the baby is used to cereal.

The age and size of the baby will determine the type of food and its consistency. Young babies require fine purees with no lumps or strings. You will have to add breast milk, formula, or boiled water to loosen the puree enough for new eaters. Some parents use soy or rice milk in baby food. As the baby grows, the food can become thicker and with tiny chunks. The small chunks will encourage baby to gum, and eventually chew, the food. Your little one will soon learn to eat small dices of fruits and vegetables along with Mom and Dad.
Uncommon baby food

There are a few foods that need no preparation other than mashing with a fork or blending in a food mill: banana, avocado, and papaya.

If you dry home-grown fruits or vegetables, those can also be made into baby food. The dried food should be ground into a fine powder, or a coarse powder if you have an older baby, and reconstituted with breast milk or formula. A good example of dried food that reconstitutes well is dried apple rings. Also, potato flakes or chips, pears, green beans, peas and squash make excellent baby food.

Another unconventional source is canned fruits or vegetables. Canned fruits should be in water, if possible. If they are in syrup, they should be drained and rinsed. Then you can puree them and serve. Canned vegetables are just as simple. Use some of the water the vegetables are packed in to blend the food. Avoid canned vegetables that contain a lot of salt. Canned pumpkin, not pumpkin pie, was a favorite of my son.

Plain yogurt is very good to serve older babies. It may need to be thinned with breast milk or formula. Cottage cheese should be blended before serving and it, too, may need to be thinned.
Getting started

The equipment needed is basic. You must have pots and pans to cook in, something to blend the food into a puree, and containers to store the food. A steamer basket is useful for the vegetables. A blender, food processor, food mill, or baby food grinder all work well to create purees. Old baby food jars, rigid plastic containers, or ice cube trays work wonders in storing your concoctions.

Everything you use to make baby food should be very clean. Sterilizing the jars and utensils is recommended.
Basic recipes

Fruits, such as apples, pears, peaches, apricots, and plums should first be peeled and cut into small pieces. Pour enough water over them to cover completely, but take care not to add too much water. The amount of water you’ll need will vary with the size of your pot and the amount of fruit. Simmer until tender, usually 10 to 30 minutes.

The fruit can be stored in the refrigerator or frozen. Don’t thin the puree until you are ready to serve it to your baby. The best way I have found to freeze baby food is using ice cube trays. I fill each tray with the puree and pop it in the freezer. Once frozen solid, put the puree-cubes in freezer bags. This makes it easy to remove only a few cubes at a time. The puree can also be frozen in baby food jars or small can/freeze jars, always allowing space in the jar for expansion. Rigid plastic containers also work well. No matter what container you use, freeze baby food in small amounts for quicker thawing.

Another reason I prefer the ice cube method is the ability to combine different foods. I almost always make single-food purees. Then, I can combine different fruits and vegetables and see if my son likes them. For example, my son loved sweet potatoes but hated green beans. I combined two cubes of sweet potato with one of green bean and he didn’t mind. I gradually increased the amount of green bean and now, it is one of his favorites. Thaw the cubes in the refrigerator overnight. Jars and containers take longer to thaw, so you will have to plan in advance. If I need to rush the cubes along, I put them in a double boiler over boiling water. I try not to use the microwave for baby food, due to the uneven heating.

Vegetables, such as carrots, sweet potatoes, peas, green beans, squash, and potatoes should be peeled and diced. Steam them until they are tender. The time will vary, depending on the size of the pieces and the amount in the steamer basket. Once they are pureed, freeze them just as you would fruits.

If I want to add meat to my son’s diet, I puree whatever I am cooking, minus the spices and seasonings. After it’s fully cooked and pureed, I add it to his vegetables.

Beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, celery, collard greens, lettuce, spinach, and turnips contain high quantities of nitrates, which can cause illness in babies. Limit the quantity of these foods in your baby’s diet.

Honey should never be given to a child under age one. Some honey contains botulism which can be deadly to babies.
On to “real food”

Once your baby has outgrown fine purees, or even the chunkier versions, you can still provide healthy meals. Dice fruits, vegetables and meats and let your little one feed himself. If you are letting baby feed himself, give him a little at a time. Measure what you give him and after he is done eating, put whatever has fallen into his high chair back into the measuring cup. This will give you an opportunity to see how well your baby eats.

If you have a child who doesn’t like fruits or vegetables, try being innovative. Instead of serving them fruit dices, try a blended-fruit drink. Blend one cup milk with ½ banana, ½ cup fresh berries, or ½ cup canned peaches. Make fruit-filled gelatin or try adding pureed beets. Sweeten vegetables with apples and pears.

sweet potatoes and bananas
sweet potatoes and apples

pumpkin and apples
apples and blueberries
banana and avocado

I have noticed that when ever I am worried or down I sew more. I sewed 3 diapers yesterday!! Two that I will eventually put on ebay and one for my son! It just makes me feel better when I am sewing. It calms me right down and it is better than taking a pill. The feeling I get from sewing last longer. I still feel good and it is the next day. I guess if I really want to make this a business I need to feel down more often! HAHA I will sew tons!!

I know for myself that I have saved a ton. I started out buying them and I have sold them all and made my money back and now I make my own cloth diapers for basically nothing. Fitted Cloth Diapers Are Easy To Make!

I have been doing more sewing. I have sewn a diaper a day for the past week!! That is about all that I can do right now. My Little one takes about an hour and a half nap during the day and that is enough time to wash dishes, dust, clean bathroom, take out trash, etc, AND SEW A DIAPER!!!
As you see in the pictures above - I sewed my son a new fitted. This one I changed up a bit and made the tabs a bit longer, I had noticed that the last couple of diapers I made for him the tabs were too short and they seem too small. The one in the picture is made of construction equipment print flannel that I got at walmart and the inside is from a red tshirt that I do not wear anymore!! The best thing about this fitted cloth diaper is that my little one LOVES IT!!

This one has a western print outer and PUL with flannel inner. Very cute. I finally received the aplix in the mail yesterday that I ordered from SewShoppe and I am going to finish this up this morning so that he can wear it. So easy to make when I have my sewing machine working right!! I got some more flannel at Wally World yesterday and hope to start him a new one.

Embellished Prefold Cloth Diapers

As you can see by the pictures above, it is not hard to embellish prefolds. You just cut a piece of fabric to fit in the middle. I cut it a bit bigger so that I can fold the edges over. Than I sew it on!! I did all of these in about a day and half, I could have done them a lot quicker, but I have a Terrible Two in the house!!

Made Some Homemade Slippers For Little One

This was so fun !! I found a free pattern by accident and decided to try and make a pair for my son! I found out they were so easy to make that I ended up making him two pair of them. One pair is black fleece and the other pair is fleece with veggie tales fabric. VERY CUTE!! Pic shows the veggie tales pair. The free pattern can be found HERE!!!

Embellishing Prefolds

Night Time Cloth Diapering

I have always worried about night time even though I have not really had a problem with leaking when using a Wiggle Worm Bottom cover and a prefold. But this is just amazing. I made my son an AIO last week and he used it last 2 nights and when he wakes up in the morning it does not even feel wet!! I need to make some more like this. I showed pics of it a couple of days ago on here. It is the dog bone one. It is just flannel, birdseye, PUL , and the center is from a prefold and it is only sewed at the ends so that it will dry quicker.
